Antiques Roadshow, Guild Hall, Henley in Arden
I attended a fundraising event and enjoyable talk given by Antiques Roadshow expert Paul Atterbury followed by a wonderful afternoon tea. This all took place in the wonderful Guild Hall building in the centre ofHenleyinArden.
The Guild Hall dates from 15th century (1400s) and was the meeting place of the Guild of St John, a religious and social order.
In 1442, Ralph Boteler became Lord of the Manor on the death of his brother and inherited the building, which he restored in 1449.
WJ Fieldhouse again restored the Guild Hall in 1915 and he also revived the Court Leet. The Hall, together with the adjoining cottage and gardens were put into a Trust for the residents of Beaudesert and Henley in Arden by Nancy Barnard, the daughter of WJ Fieldhouse in 1957.
The property is looked after by the Guild Hall Trust, which plans to raise £30,000 over the next four years to pay for its essential conversation and improvements. Its hoped that it will become a centre for meetings and social gatherings in the Town, thereby ensuring an income and its survival for future generations.
